If today's 11-6 drubbing by the Minnesota Twins taught Blue Jays fans anything it's that Matt Clement surely won't be joining the team northward. Clement wasn't amazing through four innings, but he wasn't terrible either, allowing three runs, but then Minnesota had other ideas. Clement would lose composure, as Minnesota racked up eight runs in the frame and Clement's line looked something like this: 4.1 IP, 6 hits, 9 runs, 8 earned, 7 walks, two strikeouts, and one big Justin Morneau bomb.
It's safe to say that Matt Clement had no control whatsoever.
And whatever Scott Richmond had to do to control the bleeding, he did. Richmond would allow a couple more runs in that ill-fated 5th, but would settle down to pitch 3 scoreless frames from the 6th-8th as the bottom half of the 9th was not neccessary due to the Twins winning by a large margin, essentially marking the end of the game.
So you could say that Richmond was steady. Steady is as steady goes though, and Scott Richmond is the model of steadiness. Remember his first three starts as a Jay, all with eerily the same similar line? Steady. SSR (STEADY SCOTT RICHMOND).
Now one must forget all the ravings I had about Matt Clement earlier, and realize well, Matt Clement is a rusty gearbox that may never see major league action ever again.
Other positives out of the loss include a 2 for 3 sparkling effort from sophmore Adam Lind, and Jason Lane continues his hot hitting with another 1 for 3 game!

We really should have hopped off this Clement bandwagon a long time ago. The guy is a junker. A mere shadow of the great pitcher he used to be. At least this year one of J.P.s projects (ala Zambrano, Ohka, etc.) won't hack through the first 2 months of the year at the big league level.
There were comments about Clement's velocity, he could only throw about 87 MPH, 88 MPH....
Our pitching rotation has had a drastic shift since the end of last year. Doc and MacGowan were low to mid 90's guys, and AJ was a mid to high 90's guy.
The '09 Jays will be featuring 3 if not 4 starters that are hailed as "control" guys...guys that are at best going to hit 90mph. Not that power pitching is required to win, but we definately aren't going to be sporting the intimidating kind of pitching that we were a year ago.
Gotta love the good old dependable Scotty Richmond!
A rough start doesn't mean he is garbage. If that's the case, then the d-backs might as well let Brandon Webb start the season in AAA. He has had back to back shit outings. While you will argue that Webb is a Cy Young winner and blah blah blah, take a look at Clements time with the cubbies. He has proven that he can pitch well (especially against high powered offenses of St Louis and Houston). Coming of surgery is no easy feat. Let's just see how he fares in his next outing before we throw his ass to Las Vegas
Hey Bubbles,
Nobody said this wasn't a cruel profession at times, but as much as you might like to, it's not possible to turn back the clock. It's beginning to look like Clement might just have reached his expiry date. Surgery is never a good sign for a career, despite the number of pitchers who've come back quite successfully. Stats will reveal that far more surgeries fail to revive a career, but then we hear less about them.
Clement has had some time in the sun, so he will now have time to contemplate the reality of what the future may hold. I hope that he has something to fall back on.....like a degree of some kind!
clement- will be in aaa, and his career may be over soon after. and Bubbles by the way cito has said- clement WONT HAVE A NEXT SPRING OUTING>
I don't think Matt Clement will need to find a job, or rely on a degree, considering the 3 year/$25.5M (2005-07) contract he signed with Boston after the 2004 season.
I think he could still help out a team, just not this one, as we have no room in the pen, and better alternatives in the minors for the rotation.
It's too bad, because he was once a very good SP. But they say labrum surgery is the hardest to recover from, especially considering the range of motion the surgery limits you to, which results in lack of control/accuracy in many cases.
Lets hope that McGowan and Janssen are young enough to come back with more success than Clement has had over the last three seasons.
Cheers to that.
Anyone else find it hilarious that every time Bubbles opens his mouth it's like the most controversial thing he's ever said?
Hahaha yeah :) I love how that always happens.
HollywoodJ, that's the first I heard that Cito has put an end to Clement's stay. Had I known that earlier, I would not have said it.
